More than simple possession of an illegal substance or Possession with the Intent to Sell and Deliver (PWISD), Trafficking in a substance brings the punishments outside of the regular Structured Sentencing grid and requires a mandatory fine and jail sentence regardless of the individual's past criminal history. There are, however, ways to negotiate around the mandatory requirements of the statute by proving "substantial assistance" to law enforcement or by reducing the trafficking offense to "attempted" trafficking. That small reduction could reduce the jail time a person has to serve exponentially.
